Planning your honeymoon after your elopement? Whether you’re dreaming of beaches, adventure, incredible food, or rich culture, let me tell you why Puerto Rico is the perfect post-elopement destination. My husband and I spent seven unforgettable days exploring this beautiful island, and we fell in love with everything it had to offer. Here’s a look at what made our trip so special and why you should consider Puerto Rico for your honeymoon.
Puerto Rico offers the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and culture, making it ideal for both honeymoons and elopements. Whether you’re exchanging vows by a waterfall, snorkeling with sea turtles, or sipping piña coladas on the beach, this island promises an unforgettable elopement and post-wedding escape all in one.
Condado Ocean Club
We chose to stay at the Condado Ocean Club in San Juan. This adults-only hotel sits right on the beach and features a stunning infinity pool overlooking the ocean. It was peaceful and relaxing—exactly what we needed after our wedding. The hotel also had a restaurant onsite and valet parking available. If you’re looking for a beachfront hotel that feels luxurious and intimate, I highly recommend it. The only aspect I was not accounting for was that you had to pay a daily parking fee. Since the hotel sits on Ashford Avenue there was little to know street parking, so keep that in mind if you decide to book this place.
Explore El Yunque Rainforest
We booked a guided trip through El Yunque, where we swam in natural pools, slid down a natural-made water slide, and even swung into the water from a rope swing! Highlights included visiting Las Tinajas Falls and Hacienda Tinajas. This experience felt like pure magic.
I was expecting a longer hiking trip, but the hiking portion did not take much time at all. It was still a 4 hour excursion and it most definitely was EXHAUSTING. For our trip the tour bus actually picked us up at our hotel and before we went into the forest we actually stopped at a nearby shop that had different snack items, water, & water proof pouches for your phones. Now, during this trip they do take photos of you and whoever else comes along so if you don’t want to risk losing your phone you can leave it on the bus.
Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in San Juan
We snorkeled with Try Snorkeling & Scuba Diving at Escambron Henge in San Juan. Swimming alongside sea turtles was surreal! This was one of my favorite activities because I adore sea turtles, BUT BE CAREFUL! Touching any of the sea turtles comes with a $10,000 price tag seeing as they are a protected species. DON’T TOUCH THE SEA TURTLES. Afterward, we refueled at Miramar Food Truck Park.
Scooter Tour Through Old San Juan
We rented scooters and explored landmarks like San Cristobal Castle, Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis, and Parque de las Palomas. We even passed by iguanas on our ride!
Horseback Riding at Hacienda Campo Rico
One of the most unique parts of our trip was horseback riding at Hacienda Campo Rico. They also offer ATV tours. We saw white deer and Caiman crocodiles in the ponds—so cool! The horseback riding took 2 hours and they even let us run our horses. My husband’s horse was very particular about being in the front though… I gotta tell you they will pair a rider with a horse that matches their personality or something.
Relax at Playa de Piñones
After horseback riding, we relaxed at Playa de Piñones and enjoyed local food stalls nearby.
Nightlife at La Placita de Santurce
The perfect spot for drinks and music—we loved hopping between restaurants and bars while hearing live music from every direction.
We missed out on the Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking and Cayo Icacos Snorkeling Trip, but that just gives us more reason to return. Next time we are also looking at renting an AirBNB for a more homie feel and maybe explore more local areas outside of San Juan. Being Puerto Rican myself, visiting this island isn’t just a vacation—it’s a way to connect to my culture and history. My husband and I are already planning to return every year to create new memories.
Whether you’re dreaming of a relaxing post-elopement honeymoon or considering saying your vows in Puerto Rico itself, this island offers the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and romance. As an elopement photographer based in Tennessee and Mississippi—but always ready to travel—I’d love to help couples capture their love stories here in Puerto Rico. From beachfront ceremonies to rainforest adventures, this destination is ideal for both intimate elopements and unforgettable honeymoons.
